Music - Good and Bad?

To my friends and family - who read this and have the time to answer -

Kyrie's Music Theory teacher asked the question yesterday in class,

"What makes music good, and what makes music bad?"

He used his definition of music - combination of rhythm, harmony and melody.

What say ye?

Music with lyrics, or without? The words can certainly, immediately, make the music good or bad from their content.

To me, music is a bit like writing - we know good writing when we see it. We recognize skill, complexity mixed with efficiency, innovation inspired by tradition, a thorough knowledge of the genre on the part of the writer, and dexterity on his part not only in creativity but in execution.

Much of what we define as "beautiful" or "ugly" in music is cultural, and we would be wise to admit it, and not fuss over it as if it were ethical. However, just because it's cultural doesn't mean it isn't important. Our culture defines for us, to an extent, what beautiful music is. Our personal preferences do as well.

By "good or bad" I assume her teacher doesn't mean "beautiful or ugly." I assume he means "excellent or poor." So - creativity, skill, natural talent, knowledge.
